6th Grade Beginning Band Timeline

The first week of school, all 6th grade students will go through a rotation that gives them an introduction to their choices in band, orchestra and chorus.  The normal middle schedule includes two periods per day in the connections department, which includes band, orchestra, chorus, P.E., art and technology.  It is during these two daily periods that this introductory rotation will take place.

Thur - Monday,  Aug 1 - 5:  For these three days, each student will spend their connections time in art, P.E., business, band, orchestra and chorus – one class period in each room.  On the day your student visits the band room, they will have a chance to see each band instrument up close, hear it, engage in interactive activities, and learn about band from current and former students themselves!  They will also be given the official band registration form on this day.

Wednesday, August 7:  All band, chorus, and orchestra registration forms are due today.  Students will attend the music class they have chosen to join.  We will make sure we follow up with all missing forms, so no student is left out!  They will also receive their basic introduction to the band room and daily class procedures on this day.

Thursday, August 8: All band, chorus, and orchestra students will receive their first official connections schedule. Band will be a year-round class, but the other connections classes will rotate every 9 weeks.

Starting August 12: Instrument Test Drive! We will be delving in deeper to the individual band instruments and what it means to be in the band!  During this time period, your child will have the opportunity in class to try every instrument with the aid of professionals, Mrs. Tingle, and Mrs. Watts.  You and your child will have feedback from us to help in deciding on the perfect fit for your child to learn in band class this year!

Friday, August 30: First day of instruments in band class and "First Family Lesson Day"! Your child will use their band locker & combination lock,  to keep their band materials safe and organized for their final 2 classes of the day.

Remember, it takes time to learn a band instrument the right way!  Do not expect lots of songs at first, but you will be amazed at what your child has learned by the first concert (Tues. 11/19, 7:00PM in the LMMS Theater)!
